PINEHURST – Crews from Silver Valley Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire Monday afternoon in the Pine Creek area of Pinehurst. 

According to SVFR Deputy Chief John Miller, the call came in just before 2 p.m. Three fire engines, two ambulances and approximately 17 emergency personnel responded to the incident. 

Firefighters were able to gain control of the blaze quickly after arriving on scene. Miller said it took crews about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control, but despite the rapid response, the structure sustained substantial damage, particularly to the ceiling and roof. 

"The structure involved was a shop that also contained residential living space," Miller said. "Fire damage was primarily concentrated on the roof and truss system. Due to truss failure, water application, and the need for firefighters to check for hidden fire extension, a significant portion of the ceiling within the residential area either collapsed or had to be removed during suppression and overhaul operations." 

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Miller said that while the building suffered significant damage, many of the occupants' belongings were spared from direct involvement in the fire itself. However, some personal property sustained smoke or water damage during firefighting operations. 

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation. 

In addition to providing details about the incident, Miller reminded residents about the importance of fire safety when conducting outdoor burning activities. 

"SVFR would also like to remind residents conducting outdoor burning, including burn barrels, small slash piles, and yard-waste fires, to remain with their fire at all times and have a shovel and charged water hose immediately available," Miller said. "Unattended fires may be extinguished by responding fire personnel regardless of the size of the fire or whether a burn permit has been obtained." 

Miller and SVFR Chief Scott Dietrich also expressed appreciation for the firefighters who responded to the incident. Both recognized the efforts of the department's volunteer crews, whose response helped bring the blaze under control and limit further damage to the structure. 

"Their response and continued commitment to our communities are greatly appreciated," Miller said.
