BONNERS FERRY — Enrollment is above projections, Boundary County School District Superintendent Jan Bayer told board trustees last week.

At the middle school, there are 123 eighth graders, 104 seventh graders and 109 sixth-grade students.

At Bonners Ferry High School, enrollment is up by about 40 students, and about 70 students have enrolled in the district's charter school program, she told trustees.

While the high school saw increased enrollment, Bayer said it isn't enough to justify another teacher at the school.

The superintendent told the board that the district had projected 100 students would attend the charter school and that enrollment at the online academy would increase by 17 students.

While the numbers are slightly different than what was projected, Bayer told the board that the numbers were overall positive for the district.

"We're still higher than we projected by 70 kids so that's exciting."

Prior to the start of school, the superintendent said the district had a projected enrollment of 1,491; however, initial enrollment after a few weeks of school shows 1,560 students.

In addition, online enrollment is at 284 students.

Bayer said the district's administrative team will be taking a look at where enrollment stands in the district and where adjustments might need to be made.

"We have one school that has two classrooms with 13 each, which is a combined classroom, and two other schools," the superintendent said.

Adjustments also might need to be made in the district's online program, which could have been adjusted down by a staff member since enrollment is not above 300 students, said Bayer. However, she added that is not something she wants to do.

"So for the first time ever, we might do some juggling, but we'll see," Bayer told the board. "I don't like to do that. I don't want to do that."

The district is working to ensure that attendance among students is at its goal of 95% or above, Bayer said.

"We're going to keep pushing that," she added. "Every school is coming up with plans."

The district is also working on its math proficiency goals and has fully implemented standards-referenced reporting from kindergarten through eighth grade.

"We're excited, but there's always tweaking that needs to happen," Bayer said.

In other news, Bayer told board trustees that work is continuing on schedule on the new Valley View Elementary, with beams and trusses recently added to the structure.

Work on the project is taking place in "zones" with one zone at a time being prepped, then concrete poured and then crews moving on to the next section.

Bayer said the goal is to get everything framed and the roof on prior to cold weather and snow. That will allow crews to work on the building's interior through the winter.
