LETTER: Stopping bridge on Flathead Lake is priority

Recently, the media has reported as “completed” the bridge to Dockstader Island on the north shore of Flathead Lake, near Bigfork. On or before Aug. 15, Flathead District Court will rule on the validity of the permit that allowed the bridge to be built in the first place. This ruling will determine fundamentally whether Montana’s Lakeshore Protection Act provides meaningful protection for any lake anywhere in Montana.

In the rich tradition of Jonathan Swift irony, Carol Albanese's letter (Daily Bee, June 7) discusses valid grounds for resistance to the amnesty bill being pushed, pulled and yanked through Congress. There are Americans who urge support for the bill; after all, it does seem to support Emma Lazarus's immortal words engraved on the base of the Statue of Liberty in 1886; "… Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free …" But there is a difference now that must be acknowledged.

Jan. 15 is upon us and it is a dark day for our once great republic. We are told that we are not to judge a man according to the color of his skin, then we give honor to a man because of the color of his skin. Martin Luther King Jr. was, at best, a man of questionable character. The FBI files have been sealed for years, so that by the time truth is released, the myth will have more validity than reality; so what is new?

In response to Rod Gramer’s My Turn article on July 27, I agree that there is a valid concern about the low percentage of people in the Idaho workforce with adequate education or training. What Mr. Gramer failed to mention, is what type of education/training the employers of Idaho need from their prospective employees. This information would translate into a better understanding of what education our high school graduates should pursue.
