Bonner County is suing Marcella Phillips for an illegal junkyard. She should just ask for a zoning variance. The P&Z commission would likely deny it, as they’re obliged to follow the law. She could appeal it, as there are now no grounds for appeal. The county commissioners would ignore the P&Z hearing (in a de novo appeal hearing) and likely grant her request, as they’re free to ignore the law. The current commissioners and candidate Dan McDonald believe she has the “freedom” to use her property as she wants.

We certainly live in remarkable times, and 2016 has been one for the ages. The Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series after 108 years. Matthew Centrowitz became the first American since 1908 to win the 1,500 meter run at the Olympics. Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in literature, and Donald Trump won the presidency. The idea that the GOP was going the way of the Whigs as one local voice has predicted has been postponed for the time being.

In response to Janice Shay's April 13 item Budget: Motive murky as ever, I wonder why she left out President Bush ("W") and the righties because under their type of patriotism borrowed to fund three wars and that complicated Medicare Part D from China off the books to name a few along with tax cuts for the richest and corporations than the trillion or so given to Wall Street, the banks and AIG with no oversight.

The Nature Childcare Center in Columbia Falls suffered an electrical fire Saturday, Feb. 4. The fire didn’t destroy the building, but it did cause heat and smoke damage, leaving the center temporarily inoperable, according to Aleigha Russell, who works at the center.
