NEPOTISM: Edinger should know better
I believe Councilman Ron Edinger has a real problem with his statement about nepotism. As a member of the Coeur d'Alene City Council, it is assumed he would especially know about this since he has been on the council in one position or another for more than 30 years and surely since the nepotism law was passed by the legislature. If I am caught speeding in a 35 mph zone and tell the court I did not know this was a 34 mph speed limit, can I be excused for not knowing? The obvious answer is no. We cannot use a defense of not knowing the law to avoid the consequences of an infraction. Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense. State V. Dolsby 143 Idaho 352, 145 P.3d 917. (Citing Fox, 124 Idaho at 926, 866 P.2d at 183.)

ISSUES: There's always two sides
Mr. Gressler, I would like to thank you for your service to our country, despite your apparent disillusionment with the conflict in which you served. While I have never served in combat, or for that matter, in the military, I know many people who have, including a number of Vietnam veterans. While my opinions about military issues may hold no water for you, my opinions are shared and validated by most of the combat veterans I know. I’m glad you have received good care through the VA over the years. Many others have been less fortunate. While I do not work for an insurance company, and as imperfect as our healthcare system is, I defy you to find another nation of comparable size that has healthcare as good, or better than, ours.

LETTER: Life-after-death is just a theory
There are often letters to the editor which either imply or directly state that there is “life-after-death.” This is a basic concept in many religions and is commonly used to recruit people to join. Offering eternal life is a powerful “carrot-on-a-stick” because of the extreme fear which humans have of death. It is important to recognize that life-after-death is a “theory” which has not been shown to have validity.

Red Cross offers movie tickets to blood donors
OTHELLO — The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in Othello on July 23, where donors can have a chance to save a life and get a free movie ticket to boot. According to Red Cross spokesperson Betsy Robertson, anyone who donates blood or platelets to the Red Cross during the month of July will be emailed a free movie ticket from Fandango, usable at the AMC Classic Theater in Kennewick, among others. The ticket giveaway is in partnership with Universal Pictures to promote their new film “Twisters,” but the ticket is valid for any movie if used before the end of the year, Robertson said. Additionally, each donor in July will be automatically entered in a drawing to win a 2025 Ram 1500 Bighorn pickup, Robertson said.
