Snow shuts down federal government; life goes on
WASHINGTON - If snow keeps 230,000 government employees home for the better part of a week, will anyone notice?
JOBLESS: Outside eagerly looking in
I was laid off a little over three months ago — a first for me in 29 years. I have submitted more than 70 applications to various businesses. In many cases, I have applied for work well below my level of training and experience.

SPILL: Pipeline peril awaits
The picture and article, 10/26/13, section B, page 5, is exactly what the Midwest has to look forward to if and when the Keystone pipeline is built. Instead of a small, greater than football field-sized oil spill, it’ll be more likely several hundred acres, and will be over their main aquifer. This “small” leak was because of a 1/4” hole. What happens when a hundred foot section flows out, or worse yet a few nut cases do the job in several places at once?
SAMUEL: Where was help?
Regarding comments in the Jan. 22 story “Not a safe place for kids:”
BINGHAM: A false conservative
Two years ago we elected a commissioner who ran unopposed and was not vetted. This year a candidate for commissioner in District 3 is misrepresenting himself. When a publication questioned Bob Bingham’s qualifications for office, one of his supporters panicked, writing that journalists should not vet his candidate, but that the public should do so unsupported. So, let’s do so.
Public awareness program aimed at aquifer protection
They are appearing across Kootenai County - stormwater disks reminding the public that fluids flowing into drywells, catch basins and grassy swales eventually mix into our drinking water.
TRASH: It can be golden
I wholeheartedly agree with Jim Hollingsworth. After spending four years of evenings and weekends building my house in Laguna Canyon (Orange County) in 1971, my wife and I moved in. At that time we did not subscribe to a trash service so I would load up my utility trailer with trash and occasionally drop it off at the county’s landfill on the way to work.

Another summer ruined by lake's poisoning
Another summer ruined by the poisoning of our lake. They tell me that the chemicals won't harm me, that after five days I can start watering my yard again, and drinking the water.
SENIORS: Don't just deposit them
This is an open letter to all the senior care places, especially those with buses. Last Monday was senior day at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort. In the evening hours my wife and I noticed an influx of senior people. This group was challenged. Some mentally and some physically. To us it seems some home just took a bus load of senior folks to the casino to play. That playing is what got our attention. One lady could not hardly see and was trying to put money in the wrong slot. Another lady sat next to me and was only betting 5 cents on a dollar a bet machine and did not seem to understand how the machines work. I did not notice anybody checking on these people. One lady was worried about missing her bus. She said she did not know when or where the bus would be and if she might be left behind.
