Four and a half years ago, I took a job that didn’t turn out as I expected. I accepted a position as a reporter with the Columbia Basin Herald, thinking that I’d be walking away from an editor’s position at a Texas newspaper. The idea, at the time, was to get a bit more work-life balance and return to the Inland or Pacific Northwest to be closer to family.

The wild hair, famous scowl, furrowed brow and even slight creases in the vest into which the ruffled cravat is tucked are captured in an alabaster bust of Ludwig van Beethoven. The 2-foot-tall statue that was recently given to the Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene is as mysterious as it is detailed. “We don’t yet know when it was actually carved,” Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene Artistic Director Kent Kimball said Monday.

Earlier this year, Tomi McLean retired as Rathdrum’s police chief, ending a 33-year career in law enforcement. She was appointed as the first female Rathdrum police chief in 2016. She began as a reserve officer in Post Falls and Rathdrum in 1991 and served exclusively in Rathdrum since 1994.
