FEES: Atlas shrugs (again)

I was surprised to see in The Press that the average student fees for college in Idaho increased by 34 percent from 2010 through 2017. Every year I receive a notice from my county retirement plan showing how much is deducted for my health care premiums. For 2010 through 2017, my premiums increased by 134 percent. This is quite an economic burden but this increase does not include medications, office visits and hospital expenses — these are extra out-of-pocket costs on top of the 134 percent.

SHEPPERD: Heartfelt tribute

When I read of Jim Shepperd’s death, I could only think of what a good man he was and how blessed I am to have known him. In all my years of reporting for the Coeur d’Alene Press from the mid-90s to 2013, he was one of the best people I had the privilege to spend time with, to write about and get to know.

BROOKS: A consumer's hero

For several months, I fought a losing battle with the local office of a much larger company. They arbitrarily changed my billing status and I began receiving bills more than three times the norm. I continued to pay my normal amount, marking it “in dispute.” My building administrator spent many hours on the phone and in face-to-face meetings, to no avail. In early June, my service was disconnected.

Whitefish Police received a report of a deer with a missing foot lying beneath a tree in town. The caller thought the deer was suffering and would have to be dispatched, but officers found the deer was able to walk.

Kalispell Police Department received a report from someone who alleged their husband was yelling at them to get out of the bathroom and was banging on the door when the line disconnected. On the call back, both parties “agreed to keep the peace.”
