Playing clutch basketball when it counted, the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls defeated the visiting St. Regis Tigers 58-56 in overtime in Hot Springs Dec. 16.

Coach Brady Ovitt and his Savage Heat return to action playing at Noxon Jan. 2. Originally set to play at Superior last Friday, Ovitt said that game was rescheduled to Jan. 23 due to the power outages in the area last week. Ovitt said the home game with Superior has also been rescheduled to Jan. 6.

Ovitt said the strong guard play of Kara Christensen and Eleanor Massey, who scored 24 and 17 points each respectively, was key for the Heat in the win over St. Regis last week.

“We led the game most of the way but had a rough third quarter when St. Regis battled their way back,” he said adding that the Heat finally put the game away late in the OT. “Dakota Slonaker made a couple of huge putbacks down the stretch to seal it for us.”

Slonaker, one of five freshmen on Hot Springs’ roster, finished the game with seven points in support of Christensen’s 24 and Massey’s 17, Makenzie Johnson added six points and sisters Zaih and Kora Hensrude two apiece.

Shelby Simkins netted 15 points to pace St. Regis, Khila Teeters added 11, Lilly Sansom 10, Emma Gillette and Shannon Todd eight each and Daisy Sansom four.

To say the Lady Hawks’ shooting in Saturday’s 41-31 loss to the Blackhawks in Seeley Lake Saturday was bad is a dry understatement.
