The Charlo Vikings ran the table to win the tournament, the Hot Springs Savage Heat held up their end of the bargain by winning a solid second place, and the Superior Bobcats got their game together to grab third place in the District 14C volleyball tournament in Charlo Thursday and Friday.

Those three 14C teams now join five others from Districts 12C and 13C for the Western C divisional tournament in Manhattan beginning Thursday and winding up Saturday. The top two Western C teams then move on to the State C tournament in Bozeman November 13-15.

St. Regis took fourth in the 14C tournament, Alberton won one of three matches, and Noxon and Two Eagle River played two matches each in Charlo.

The regular season champions, coach Katie Cahoon’s Charlo squad defeated scrappy Superior in four sets Thursday and equally scrappy Hot Springs twice, both times in four sets, to clinch the crown Friday.

For their part, coach Maria Begger’s Savage Heat girls defeated Alberton and St. Regis Thursday, lost a four-setter to Charlo Friday, rebounded with a three-set win over Superior in the loser-third match, and then lost another tough four-setter to Charlo and settled for second place.

Placing third and also earning a ticket to this week’s Western C divisional tournament in Manhattan, coach Emily Verbanac’s Superior Bobcats played some very competitive volleyball in Charlo, first defeating Noxon in three sets Thursday and then pushing Charlo hard before falling to the Vikings in four sets later Thursday.

Superior clinched their Western C bid and no worse than third in the tourney by defeating Mineral County rival St. Regis three sets to one Friday, setting up the loser-third match with Hot Springs, which the Savage Heat won.

Coach Kianna Barnett’s St. Regis Tigers opened the tourney with a three-set win over Two Eagle River, lost to Hot Springs in three sets and then defeated Noxon in loser-out play Thursday evening. The Tigers’ season ended with the four-set loss to Superior Friday.

Coach Josie Shafer’s Alberton Panthers accorded themselves well in the 14C tournament. After falling to Hot Springs in three sets, the Panthers eliminated Two Eagle River in three sets later Thursday before falling to Superior in three sets Thursday evening.
