Bobcats win on senior night, earn No. 4 seed

The Superior Bobcats wrapped up a playoff berth and celebrated their seniors with a 41-0 win over the visiting Victor Pirates in Superior Friday.
Completing regular season play with a 7-2 record and in a three-way tie for second in final Western conference 8-Man standings, coach Jeff Schultz and his Bobcats ended up with the No. 4 seed out of the west due to the tiebreaker, and will visit Flint Creek, the No. 1 seed out of the south, Saturday at 1 p.m. in Drummond in the first round of the 8-Man playoffs.
Schultz has been scouting Flint Creek and has a healthy respect for the Titans, the football co-op featuring players from Drummond and Philipsburg.
“They run a different offense called the veer, are very physical and big up front,” he said, “and they are young, with 13 juniors and only one senior. They could be even nastier next year.”
The Bobcats warmed up for Flint Creek with the relatively easy win over Victor Friday.
“The kids played well and we were able to get everybody a lot of playing time,” Schultz said. “We wanted to stay healthy and get out of there with a win and we managed to do both of those things.”
Turner Milender was his usual productive self, rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for another on offense, and recording a team-high 14 tackles, including a quarterback sack on defense.
Phin Cataldo ran for one touchdown and caught a pass for another, and Gannon Quinlan also ran for another score.
Jack Kemp recorded seven tackles, including a sack, and George Hanson also pulled down seven tackles for Superior.
Shultz said starting quarterback Landon Richards did tweak an ankle during the win over Victor but doesn’t expect that injury to be a factor this week against Flint Creek.
The winner of the Superior-Flint Creek game will advance on to the quarterfinals of the 8-Man playoffs, where they will face the winner between Belt, the No. 2 team from the north, and Culbertson, the No. 3 team from the east.
