Hawks girls score sweet-spot soccer wins

They call it Coca-Cola soccer, and it hit the sweet spot for the Thompson Falls-Plains-St. Regis girls in two matches last week, an important 1-0 road win over Polson Thursday and a 10-0 victory over Browning in Plains Saturday.
Coach Nick Lawyer put it this way. “During the game (Saturday) we worked diligently on our brand of soccer,” he said. “We are calling it ‘Coca-Cola Soccer’ because it’s refreshing, crisp, and direct. We want to play quick, we want it to be enjoyable, and above all else we want to be engaging.”
The Hawks appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves in engaging with Browning Saturday and registered a feel-good win in front of the home crowd in Plains as a result. “The Browning game is always fun,” Lawyer said, “and it’s an opportunity for our younger players and less experienced players to get more playing time.”
Reacting positively to the chance to play the Coca-Cola way, the Hawks netted their first goal less than 40 seconds into the game, had three within the first 10 minutes, and ended the first half with a 6-0 lead.
TF-P-SR ended the game via the mercy rule with their tenth goal about 70 minutes in.
Katherine Wrobleski, Elsie Myers and Melodie Cook all scored two goals apiece to lead the winners, and Lexi Volk, Leanna Demars, Elizabeth Weedeman and Kylee Huff netted one goal each.
Team leaders Solveig Nygaard and Ava Lawyer did not play Saturday.
The tight 1-0 win over Polson was one of the biggest in program history for the Hawks as the Pirates are traditionally one of the stronger teams in the area. Nygaard scored the only goal of the game, and Lawyer did most of the goaltending to pace the Hawks to the win.
Solveig’s game-winning goal came on a right corner kick after Wrobleski set her up for the shot in the game’s 55th minute. Polson had a potentially game-tying goal called off later due to a hand-ball violation.
