WALLACE — A volunteer cleanup project is scheduled this weekend at Nine Mile Cemetery after recent windstorms caused widespread damage to the historic burial ground north of Wallace.
Several storms over recent months knocked down trees and limbs, scattering branches and pine needles throughout the cemetery. The damage affected several headstones and sections of the cemetery’s urn wall. Organizers are seeking community help to restore the grounds ahead of Memorial Day observances.
According to Dennis O’Brien, the cleanup effort will focus on clearing downed limbs, raking debris and improving access to headstones and memorial areas impacted by fallen trees.
Numerous volunteer efforts over the years have helped maintain the site, including work by groups such as Mountain West Bank, several student organizations and private residents.
O’Brien is encouraging volunteers to bring basic tools such as rakes and pitchforks, along with water, food and appropriate footwear. Participants are advised they will be responsible for their own safety due to steep and slippery conditions.
In addition to ground debris, falling trees also damaged sections of the cemetery’s Memory Walls, prompting organizers to seek financial donations from those unable to volunteer in person. Contributions will be used to help cover repair costs related to the wind damage.
Nine Mile Cemetery serves as the final resting place for early miners, settlers and families connected to the region’s history, as well as several local veterans. The cleanup effort is intended to ensure the cemetery is safe and presentable for families and visitors during the upcoming Memorial Day season.
“We understand the history of Nine Mile Cemetery and its importance to the families,” O’Brien said. “We want to ensure this site remains peaceful for those who are at rest here, and for their families.”
The cleanup project is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Donations can be mailed to Nine Mile Cemetery, P.O. Box 469, Wallace, ID 83873.
Questions can be directed to O’Brien at 208-512-9194.
