Plains boys season remains undecided

It’s either feast or famine for Plains Horsemen basketball fans.
Feasting on three straight home games last week, coach Tyrel Allen and his surging Horsemen, who have won three of their last four games, now will not play again until the Western B divisional tournament in Ronan March 5-7.
That is, if Thompson Falls loses to Eureka in Eureka Feb. 28. If Thompson Falls does win that game, it could mean that Plains’ season is already over as there is no District 7B tournament this year. That would be the real famine, the end of the season after not knowing and practicing just in case for two weeks.
“It is pretty weird, the way things have been playing out this season,” Allen said. "At the end of the day I guess it really doesn’t matter, we are all playing by the same rules. But it does seem like kind of shame, with us playing our best of the season lately.”
Perhaps the best the Horsemen have played this season was in their come-from-behind 57-55 win over Mission in Plains Thursday. The Horsemen warmed up for Mission by defeating Noxon 82-36 in Plains Tuesday. Plains’ busy week ended with a 73-63 loss to visiting Eureka in Plains Saturday.
Winning three of your last four is not a bad way to end a season in any event, if this does end up being the end that is.
“It is a little odd not knowing,” Allen said. "We will keep practicing hoping things work out for us but it is strange not having direct control. Especially with there being no 7B tournament this year and all.”
The win over Mission was definitely one of the Horsemen’s finest hours of the season. The Horsemen trailed 48-40 going into the fourth quarter but flipped the script on the Bulldogs by winning the fourth quarter 17-7, getting the PHS gym rocking like it hasn’t rocked in a while in the winning process.
The Horsemen featured a balanced scoring attack against Mission with Cooper Meredith leading the way with 15 points, Ben Aldridge scoring 11, Jarrett Weeks 10, Eddie Siebert eight, Chase DePoe seven and Jackson Revier eight.
Lex LaFrombois scored a game-high 35 points to lead Mission and Leelyn Shepherd added 14.
Against Eureka, the Horsemen fell behind early, battled back to lead most of the third quarter and finally fell back when the Lions outscored the home boys 24-12 in the fourth quarter.
Weeks and Aldridge scored 19 points each to lead the Horsemen, DePoe scored 10, Meredith seven, Siebert six and Tristan Allen two.
Rowan Burrows led Eureka with 19 points and Tyce VanOrden scored 17.
In the win over Noxon last Tuesday, Weeks went off for a game-high 27 points (including four 3-pointers in the third quarter), Merdith scored 18, Aldridge 14, Kyran Bostick eight, Siebert seven, DePoe six, Allen two and Cord Greer one.
