Flathead Valley Community College President Jane Karas will retire at the end of year, marking the end to her 27-year career with the school.

Karas joined the campus as the vice president of academic and student services in 1999 and ascended to the role of president two years later.

"It has been an honor and privilege to serve FVCC as its president for the last 25 years," Karas said in a statement. "The outstanding faculty, staff and visionary trustees at the college are the foundation of FVCC's success and its role as an essential community resource. Working with our many community partners in education, business, industry and government has added to the fulfillment of serving our communities. The long-term needs of our students and community have guided every decision."

During Karas’ tenure as president, the campus expanded from four buildings to 13, and more than 150 acres were added through strategic acquisitions. Major projects completed under her watch include a student housing facility and the Wachholz College Center, a multimillion-dollar performing arts and activity center that opened in summer 2023.

Academic offerings also grew to include more than 114 degrees, certificates and licensures, as well as study abroad and distance learning alternatives. Karas collaborated with local high schools to foster the Running Start dual enrollment program, in which high school students earn college credits while still in school. Other programs, such as Kids College and Senior Institute, have helped bring the college’s offerings to students of all ages.

Karas’ leadership earned her accolades, including a Bellwether Award, the Chamber Legacy Award, Montana Ambassadors Educator of the Year and the Marie Martin Community College CEO of the Year. She announced her retirement, effective Dec. 31, at a Feb. 23 Board of Trustees meeting.

"Jane Karas has given 25 years of exceptional leadership to this college and this community," said Board of Trustees Chair Callie Langohr in a Feb. 24 press release. "Her legacy is measured not just in buildings and programs, but in the countless lives she has helped shape through her commitment to accessible, high-quality education."

The board will initiate a nationwide search for a new president soon.
