Lady Devils finish season on high note
JOHN HAMILTON | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 week, 5 days AGO
It was a challenging season for the young Noxon Lady Red Devils but, in the end it was all good for coach Cory Brodmerkle and her young squad, which was comprised of almost 50% eighth graders, as they ended play on a high note at the District 14C tournament in Polson last week.
After falling 61-7 to Superior in the first round Thursday, the Devils won their first game of the season when it mattered the most at the 14C tourney, defeating Alberton 43-29 in loser out action Friday. The Lady Devils’ season ended with a 50-30 loss to St. Regis in loser out action Saturday.
Brodmerkle was very happy for her Lady Devils following the big win over Alberton, which had scored two close wins over Noxon during the regular season but couldn’t turn the trick a third time in Polson.
“The girls came out with a fire lit under them (against Alberton),” she said. “They told themselves it is now or never, and they went out and played great.”
Abigail Yoder was a big reason why the Devils found their rhythm against Alberton, scoring a game-high 24 points to lead Noxon to the win, and Sydnie Eichert chipped in with 10 more.
Releasing a season’s worth of pent-up emotion, the Noxon bench players and cheering section erupted in applause, taking the floor in celebration following the big win.
Back on the floor Saturday, the Devils’ season ended with the high-scoring loss to St. Regis. Brodmerkle said a slow start hampered the Devils in that game, although the Noxon girls did rally well in the second half.
Abby Yoder led Noxon with seven points versus St. Regis, Eichert and Kaylie Mercer scored six apiece and Emily Yoder, Brielle MacArthur amd Danni Hill two each.
Brodmerkle appreciated her team’s efforts through thick and thin. “This season has been definitely one of growth,” she said. “Looking back at the beginning of the season you wouldn't even be able to recognize this team now. Their growth, confidence, teamwork and love of the sport blossomed. I am excited to see how they will do in the future.”
