Unbeaten Tigers claim 14C title

The District 14C regular season and tournament titles are sweet, but one still gets the feeling that these St. Regis Tiger boys are not really satisfied just yet.
Coach Jesse Allan and his 20-0 Tigers capped a spotless conference season by winning the 14C tournament tile in Polson last week, sweeping past Noxon 76-56 Friday in the semifinals before totally dominating the second half and streaking past Two Eagle River 74-49 in the 14C championship tilt Saturday night.
Ranked No. 3 in the most recent power poll and one of only two remaining unbeaten Class C teams remaining in Montana, the Tigers have now stacked up the last five straight District 14C regular season crowns. A combined super-district tournament last year broke St. Regis’ 14C tourney streak which they have now restarted.
Sincerely hoping to take the next step up in the Montana Class C power structure after knocking on the door for several years now, the Tigers open the Western C divisional tournament Wednesday at the Maroon Activity Center in Butte, playing Valley Christian at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. If St. Regis wins that game, the Tigers will then take on the winner between Manhattan Christian and Seeley-Swan in the Western C semifinals Friday.
The top two teams from Butte advance on to the State C tournament in nearby Missoula March 14-16, a place Allan, his Tigers and fans would dearly love to be. And appear to deserve to be judging by their performance last week and all season long so far this winter.
Allan thinks his team is as much about the St. Regis community as it is simply about basketball.
“Our goal has been to make this team something that everyone in town can be proud of,” he said. “St. Regis is not a huge community but we have built a lot of buy-in with this team, it’s something the whole town can be part of. And it was great to see the support we have gotten this year, not just in Polson but during the entire season.”
A magical performance by Conner Lulis in the championship game against Two Eagle River turned the game St. Regis’ way Saturday night.
Leading only 34-28 at halftime, the Tigers took complete control of the game at the start of the third quarter behind Lulis, who coolly knocked down the first 11 points of the second half on a variety of moves inside and out, quickly turning the once-close game into a 45-28 blowout in the matter of only a few minutes.
Lulis finished the third quarter with 18 of the Tigers’ points scored in that period and added eight more in the fourth, finishing the game with 36 points to lead all scorers. Nate Bohn added 13 points for St. Regis, Isaac Kelly nine, Denver Thomas eight, Barrett Bessette six, and Chet Hill and Spencer Wolf one each.
Taking advantage of the Tigers’ zone defense, mainly in the first half, brothers Thomas and Talon Addison each shot down several 3-pointers on the way to 12 points apiece to lead Two Eagle.
The Tigers followed a similar path to victory over Noxon Friday night, breaking away from a close game with another stellar second half effort.
Bohn led St. Regis to the win over the pesky Devils, who hung around in the first half behind the scoring of dynamic Noxon duo Shane Hatchel and Justice Kayser, with 24 points, Lulis counted 17 this time, Kelly added nine, Thomas seven, Barrett six, Tucker Desoto five, Easton Gillette four and Hill and Demor Hostetler two each.
Seeming to have almost limitless shooting range, Hatchel scored a game-high 27 points for Noxon and Kayser added 18.
