Good, glad and not-so-ugly wins for Lady Cats

It was the good, the glad and the not-so-ugly for the Superior Lady Cats in a trifecta of interesting games last week.

In the good part, playing perhaps their best basketball of the season, coach Jeff Schultz’s Cats created chaos on the Savage Heat side on the way to convincing 66-21 win in Hot Springs Tuesday.

In the glad to survive department, the Bobcats withstood a staunch effort by a vastly improved Troy team to score an important 52-44 win over the Trojans Friday in Superior.

Lastly, in the not-so-ugly category, also in Superior Saturday, the Cats completed their trio of games for the week with a feel-good 58-22 victory over the Two Eagle River Eagles, another greatly improved team from years past.

Now 3-1 in District 14C action and 5-2 overall, the Cats host St. Regis Thursday and visit Noxon in another pair of conference games.

Schultz was grateful for the productive week of games. “We played really well in Hot Springs,” he said. “We played hard, controlled the tempo, were passing it good and making shots.

“It was the exact opposite against Troy, things weren’t going our way, we weren’t making shots and our press wasn’t as effective,” Schultz said. "We had to battle through those things and it ended up being a real good game for us. It’s nice to get that experience in close games like that and the girls came through big.”

The Cats were led to the win in Hot Springs by Maryisa Swope, who canned 19 points, Josie Crabb, who added 16, Lily Jasper (12) and Ava White (10). Maggie Haworth added four points and Makenzie Reum three.

Against Troy, Swope scored 20 points to again lead Superior, Crabb scored 14, White nine, Jasper four and Reum two.

Freshman Aspen Orr, who proved to be an effective press-breaker against Superior’s swarming defense, led the Trojan with 15 points, and Kristi Jellesed added 11.

Schultz was impressed with Two Eagle’s marked improvement from years past in the 58-22 win over the Eagles. “That’s the best Two Eagle River team I’ve seen in 18 years,” he said. "Their coach has the girls playing very hard, they are a very respectable team.”

The prolific Crabb pumped in 21 points to lead the Cats to the win, Swope chipped in with 11, Reum scored eight, Madi Allard six, White five, Haworth four and Kaydi Ereickson three.

Keke Tenas led Two Eagle River with seven points.
