Bobcats hope to bounce back strong

Jake McElroy wants his Superior Bobcats to pick themselves up, dust off and get back to work this week after a pair of disappointing losses to District 14C foes last week.

Playing without high-scoring junior guard Gannon Quinlan, who was out with a thumb injury, the Bobcats fell 71-35 to Mineral County rival St. Regis in Superior Thursday and 46-40 to Noxon in Noxon Saturday.

Now 2-4 in 14C play and 6-5 overall, coach McElroy and his Bobcats hope to get back on track with a little good old-fashioned home cooking at SHS, hosting Victor Tuesday in a non-conference game and 14C foe Charlo Saturday.

“We had a rough weekend last week, experienced a little adversity. That wasn’t us, wasn’t how we have performed in other games this year,” he said. “I’m interested to see how we respond this week. We’ve been talking about having a next man up mentality, we need to bounce back and play better, and these home games will be a good chance to do that.”

The Bobcats never found their footing in Tuesday’s game with St. Regis, falling behind 21-6 by the end of the first quarter. Unbeaten and ranked No. 6 in the most recent Class C power poll, the Tigers did not let the Bobcats get back in the game after that and moved to the win.

Landon Richards and Logan Merrill scored 10 points each to lead Superior against St. Regis, Henry Hanson added six, Phin Cataldo and Conrad Talbot three each, Noble Brockway two and Amarie Johnson one.

At Noxon, the Bobcats fell victim to a fired-up Devil squad which took control of the game late. Richards scored 21 points, including a slam dunk off a steal in the first half, to lead Superior, Brockway scored seven points, Merrill five, Catlado four and Hanson three.
