Lady Hawks overcome flu blues to win two
JOHN HAMILTON | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month, 2 weeks AGO
Battling their way through some flu blues as well as opponents, coach Mike Tessier’s Lady Hawks scored a pair of District 7B wins last week, edging by Plains 45-37 in Plains Thursday and streaking past Eureka 55-37 in Thompson Falls Saturday.
Now 3-1 in 6B loop play and 4-5 overall, the Hawks are set to host Noxon Tuesday and visit Troy Thursday.
Tessier felt fortunate to field a full team in time for last week’s games. “We were blasted by the flu bug last week,” he said. "We had only five girls at practice Monday and were limited in what we could do in practice all week otherwise.”
Still, Tessier managed to get enough players together for the weekend games. This in spite of the fact that previously injured Aubrey Baxter, who was medically cleared to play early last week, was simply too sick to practice or play by mid-week, and ended up sitting out two more games than she wanted to as a result.
Continuing on without Baxter another week, the Lady Hawks were led to the win by the double double effort of Gabi Hannum, who scored 19 points and secured 12 rebounds.
Solveig Nygaard added 10 points and seven rebounds, Annalise Fairbank nine points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals, Addy Deal five points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Emma Claridge two points, six boards, three assists and three steals.
Against Eureka, Hannum turned in yet another stellar effort, leading the Hawks with 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals, Deal added 16 points, nine boards and six assists, Nygaard 11 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals, Fairbank four points, nine rebounds and two assists, and Claridge five rebounds, an assist and two steals.
Individual scoring for the Lady Lions was not available.
