Track season closes with top finishes in Missoula, Laurel

The final weekend of track and field wrapped up for all Lake County schools as the best athletes from each school tried their hand at earning a medal. 

Each area school sent at least one participant to the state meet, making this an exciting weekend of all the local schools.


Class A and Class C schools compete in Laurel

Polson, Ronan, Charlo and Two Eagle River went east from May 28 to May 30 to the Laurel Sports Complex for a chance at winning some hardware for their schools.

For Polson, Morgan Delaney took home second in the 1600 meter finals and in 3200 meters. Quinn Delaney followed that up with a seventh place finish in both events as well. Kimora Scott earned 12th in the 3200 meter final.

Amelia Stene took eighth in the 100 meter finals and 16th in the 400 meter finals. Kellyn Nelson earned 10th in the 300 meter hurdles.

Stene, Ravea Tenas, Rosie Lies and Amaya Shizuku took eighth in the 4x100 meter finals. Nelson, Stene, Tenas and Keira Owen earned 13th in the 4x400 meter relay final.

Piper Adams got ninth in the shot put with teammate Olivia Cottet following up in 17th. Cottet also got fourth in the discus with Adams right behind her in 11th.

Nelson claimed fifth in the pole vault while Owen earned 19th in the triple jump to wrap up the Polson girls finishers.

The Polson boys saw David DiGiallonardo take third in the 1600 meter finals and Jackson Bontadelli get eighth. DiGiallonardo also nabbed second in the 3200 meters with Bontadelli behind him in fifth.

Luke Horner took 10th in the 400 meter finals. Horner, Bontadelli, DiGiallonardo and Dion Lichtenberg got 16th in the 4x400 meter relay.

John Sherry earned 12th in the shot put. Lichtenberg got 12th in the javelin as well.

Isaac Kinnick claimed second in the pole vault with August Brown finishing 17th.

For Ronan, Jewell Reum, Amitiel Schiele-Auld, Payton Steinebach and Alexis Finley earned 19th in the 4x100 meter relay final as the lone finishers for Ronan. 

The Ronan boys saw William Normandeau place 11th in the 800 meter final. Devon BigMedicine earned 26th in the 3200 meter final.

Jhett McDonald got 13th in the 300 meter hurdles and 21st in the 110 meter hurdles.

Masyn Wayman earned 15th in the shot put and 18th in the discus.

Onto Class C, the Charlo girls had Olivia Carnell earn 14th and Avery Coleman earn 20th in the shot put. Carnell also earned fourth in the discus.

Brook Cahoon nabbed seventh in the high jump. GG Hawk earned 12th place finish in the pole vault. Jaylynn Buxbaum wrapped up the Charlo girls finishers with 17th in the triple jump.

For the Charlo boys, Kenyan Dumont nabbed 22nd in the 800 meter, 23rd in the 1600 meter and 21st in the 3200 meter finals.

Karson Cox earned fourth in the javelin, seventh in the discus, seventh in the pole vault, 15th in the long jump and 18th in the triple jump. Tasker Brown grabbed 13th in the shot put and 17th in the discus.

The lone Two Eagle River representative was Christine Tenas, who placed 24th in the triple jump.


Mission, Arlee showcase talent at state meet in Missoula

Mission and Arlee took on the Class AA-B State Track Meet from May 28-30 at Big Sky High School in Missoula to see who could come away with some strong results.

For Mission, Brooklyn Leishman took 22nd in the 800 meter finals. Leishman also nabbed 21st in the 3200 meters with Raileigh McDonald finishing just ahead in 20th.

McDonald, Leishman, Sheadon Kain and Leila Hogenson all nabbed 20th in the 4x400 meter relay final.

Cora Matt earned 10th in the shot put to round out Mission’s top finishers.

The lone boys finisher was Lex LaFrombois, who took fifth in the long jump and seventh in the high jump.

For Arlee, Ava Van Maanen earned third in the 800 meters with Karma Tibbetts following up in 21st. Van Maanen also nabbed 8th in the 1600 meters.

Tibbetts grabbed ninth in the pole vault with Izabella Knoll behind her in 18th. Tibbetts also finished in 20th in the long jump and 15th in the triple jump.

For the boys, Trevor Van Maanen earned seventh in the 800 meters, 10th in the 1600 meters and 16th in the 400 meters. He was joined by Dustone Cyrus, Marshall Hinter and Eli O’Neill in grabbing 18th place in the 4x400 meter relay.

O’Neill earned eighth in the discus and 15th in the shot put. Orrin Johnson grabbed 10th in the high jump to round out all local finishers.

Softball wrapped up this past week with Polson, Ronan and Mission/Arlee/Charlo all fighting against the best in Classes A and B. Despite no local team winning a state title, they all played close games to wrap up a successful year for these three softball squads.

Polson tennis stuns top competition at state tennis tournament

In a fight for the top of the high school tennis scene in Montana, the Polson team remained the lone participant of any Lake County school at any classification. Two singles and two duos took on the best at the Class A State Tennis Tournament in Hardin with a chance at state glory. Even with no state champions, each athlete competed to the end as the tennis season closed out.
