SUPERIOR – When it was showtime, the stars of District 14C delivered.

Getting together one more time on the same court for a night of hoop fun, District 14C boys and girls basketball all-stars gathered in Superior for the conference’s first ever official all-star games March 18 in Superior.

It wasn’t serious basketball by the players that just went so hard at each other during a competitive regular season, but it was serious fun for all involved, especially for the players and, it turns out, the coaches.

There are no losers, in games like these everyone’s a winner - the fans, the coaches and most importantly the players, who got the chance to finally rub elbows with opponents in a more friendly way than they were accustomed to with their 14C rivals.

In an interesting twist, Superior girls coach Jeff Schultz and Charlo girls coach Jeff Buck were assigned as coaches for the boys teams, and St. Regis boys coach Jesse Allan and Superior boys coach Jake McElroy coached the girls squads in Superior.

Oh yeah, scores were kept and the Light jersey teams won both games, 53-42 with the girls, and 110-84 with the boys. The games were played with MOA officials and featured two 20-minute halves with a mostly running clock, stopping it only for free throws.

“It was great for the kids,” McElroy said, “and I enjoyed getting the chance to coach the girls. They played hard, had a lot of fun.”

For his part, Schultz said he was able to maintain his perfect coaching record leading the Light jersey team. “I had never coached boys before, I told my guys I was undefeated,” he said adding proudly, “and I still am.”

The boys game in particular was a fast-paced entertaining affair featuring lots of long-distance shooting and a few slam dunks in the end. A total of 24 3-point shots were made during the game, 15 by the Light team and nine by the Dark side, including some

long-range bombs from near mid-court, several of which amazingly swished through the nets.

The colors of the uniforms may have clashed at times like they did during the regular season, but the players meshed into cohesive units in a remarkably short time by the time the final horn had sounded in both games.

In the boys contest, Two Eagle River’s Jayvian Burke led all scorers with 34 points in leading the Light squad to the win, Conner Lulis (St. Regis) added 19, Justice Kayser (Noxon) 18, Barrett Bessette (St. Regis) 14, Thomas Addison (Two Eagle) and Karson Cox (Charlo) eight points each, Gannon Quinlan (Superior) five and Shea Fredette (Alberton) four.

Talon Addison (Two Eagle) led the Dark team with 19 points, Shane Hatchel (Noxon) added 17, Landon Richards (Superior) 14, Nate Bohn (St. Regis) 12, Isaac Kelly (St. Regis) 10, Devin Hill (Alberton) 10 and Tasker Brown (Charlo) two.

In the girls game, Superior’s Ava White used some good home cooking to lead the Light team to victory with 19 points, Keke Tenas (Two Eagle) scored 12, Shelby Simkins (St. Regis) eight and Makenzie Reum (Superior) five. Superior’s Lily Jasper and Charlo’s Maizey McDonald also played big minutes for the Light team.

Charlo’s Brielle Zempel led the Dark girls with 16 points, Maryisa Swope of Superior added eight, Hot Springs’ Kara Christensen seven, GG Hawk (Charlo four). Eleanor Massey (Hot Springs) three, Kora Hensrude (Hot Springs) two and Lilly Sansom of S. Regis also contributed strong play.

IN OTHER ALL-STAR GAME ACTION last week, Christensen of Hot Springs and Annalise Fairbank, Solveig Nygaard, Addy Deal and Gabi Hannum of Thompson Falls all participated in the Treasure State Classic girls all-star basketball tournament in Billings Thursday through Friday.

Christensen played for the West C team in Billings and the Thompson Falls girls all played for the West B squad.

Christensen completed a trifecta of all-star game events last week as, in addition to the Treasure State and 14C all-star games, she also played in the 29th annual Mission Mountain All-Star Games in Ronan March 17.

Other area players also invited to the games in Ronan included Hensrude and Katelyn Subatch of Plains with the girls, and Cooper Meredith and Ben Aldridge of the Plains Horsemen with the boys.
