With baseball heating up, every Lake County squad is eager for every victory they can get.
It was a week that saw some serious wins and also some heartbreaking losses. All three local teams got to the diamond to showcase what they can do in this baseball-heavy week.
Polson Baseball 16, Browning Baseball 0
The Pirates started the week with a doubleheader against Browning on April 29.
It was a dominant start to the week as Polson raked in the second inning. The second best single-inning performance of the year saw 15 runs roll in for the Pirates.
It was inevitable they were going to win this one as Browning failed to score in just three innings. Polson won the first of two games in a row 16-0.
Cole Wadsworth dominated at home plate with two RBIs on two hits and three runs scored. Liam Jackson had three RBIs to lead the team. Paxson DuMont pitched a no-hitter to close out a stunning first game.
Polson Baseball 22, Browning Baseball 0
It was much of the same in Polson’s second game against Browning on April 29.
Polson got the scoring started earlier than in their previous game, scoring 16 runs in their best single-inning scoring performance of the year. Browning continued to struggle at the plate and Polson walked away with this one handily.
Another six runs in the second inning led to a 22-0 Polson victory after three innings.
Brayson DuMont pitched a no-hitter to keep the daily slate clean. Case Cox played arguably his best game of the year with four RBIs on three hits and three runs scored. He led or tied the team in all three of those categories.
Polson Baseball 3, Frenchtown Baseball 1
The Pirates' final win of the week came in a close one against Frenchtown on May 1.
It was a defensive battle and it all came down to Wadsworth. After shining at home plate earlier in the week, he needed to step up on the mound against the Broncs.
His pitching helped control Frenchtown’s typically strong batting lineup. Frenchtown scored just once but it took Polson nearly the whole game to get on the board. However, two runs in the fifth helped gain the lead and the Pirates never looked back.
They won 3-1 after scoring again in the sixth.
Wadsworth allowed just five hits and one run while notching five strikeouts across a full seven innings pitched. He also scored a run. The lone RBI was from Paxson DuMont.
Hamilton Baseball 9, Polson Baseball 1
Despite a strong week for Polson, they came up against a buzzsaw in Hamilton on May 2.
Polson looked like they were going to keep this one close, knotting the score up 1-1 in the first before allowing no runs in the second. However, Hamilton’s hitting prowess showed up in the third with four runs.
The Pirates tried to battle back but they couldn’t find a way to get runners to home plate. The deficit was ultimately too much as Hamilton claimed victory 9-1.
Cody Haggard had the lone RBI on the day, with Jackson scoring it.
Frenchtown Baseball 17, Ronan Baseball 0
Ronan suffered some tough losses this weekend, starting on April 29 against Frenchtown.
It was a tough one early as Frenchtown nabbed four runs in the top of the first inning. As Ronan tried to rally, Frenchtown answered with nine more runs in the second inning.
The Broncs didn’t allow a hit from the Chiefs as Frenchtown went on to win this 17-0.
Florence Baseball 18, Ronan Baseball 2
Ronan had better luck at the plate in the first of two games against Florence on May 1.
It was a similar story to their first game as Ronan allowed nine runs in the first inning and four in the second. Despite an early run, the Florence bats were dynamic and had the advantage in this one.
The Falcons beat the Chiefs 18-2 after four innings.
Zander Bennett and Kenner Mock each earned an RBI in Ronan’s loss.
Florence Baseball 15, Ronan Baseball 0
Ronan suffered another loss on May 1 in the second of two games against Florence.
The Chiefs weren’t able to get their bats going in this one as Florence continued to show their run scoring ability. The Falcons dropped eight runs in the first inning as Ronan tried their best to stop the momentum.
Another seven runs in the third inning led to Ronan dropping their third game of the week 15-0.
Everett Lozeau was the lone Chief to register a hit.
Florence Baseball 7, MAC Baseball 2
Mission/Arlee/Charlo started their week on April 28 against Florence and the Falcons continued their pursuit.
It looked close early on with MAC drawing even after the first inning. However, back-to-back innings with two runs scored pushed back any chance of momentum that the Bulldogs had. Two more runs late in the game sealed it as MAC didn’t score for the last four innings.
Florence notched the 7-2 victory.
Hudson Hawkaluk scored the only RBI while Jake Helser led the team in hits with three.
Frenchtown Baseball 12, MAC Baseball 1
MAC also took a trip to Frenchtown on April 30 where they also struggled to capture a win.
Frenchtown controlled this game for four-and-a-half straight innings. After six runs in the first, the Broncs were tough to stop as the Bulldogs battled to make it a game. Unfortunately, Frenchtown showed too much poise, allowing MAC to score just one run in the top of the fifth.
MAC lost 12-1 to the Broncs. Helser had the lone RBI for the Bulldogs.
MAC Baseball 11, Browning Baseball 0
It was redemption time for MAC as they started a doubleheader against Browning on May 2 with a massive performance.
The Bulldogs shone for five straight innings, scoring in the first three and shutting out Browning the whole way. Hawkaluk and Jason Leishman were the top offensive options while a pitching rotation of Jake Helser, Ronson Hout and Micheal McCrea allowed just one hit.
Five runs in the first inning were enough but they kept scoring with three runs in the second and third. That performance was enough to secure the 11-0 victory.
Hawkaluk led with two RBIs while tying Leishman for hits. Hawkaluk and Helser both scored three runs as well.
MAC Baseball 17, Browning Baseball 1
MAC kept up the strong hitting in the second game of their doubleheader against Browning on May 2.
The Bulldogs stunned Browning in the second inning. After going up 2-0, they rattled off 14 runs for one of their best single-inning performances of the year. It was a clinic in clobbering the ball as these kids rounded out a huge doubleheader.
It was a team affair as MAC cleaned up Browning in three innings with a 17-1 victory.
Hawkaluk and Leishman shone again as both scored three runs. Eli Dunavin led the team in RBIs with two. Leishman also allowed no hits in two innings with six strikeouts.
