Polson tennis gets big wins over Bigfork, Corvallis

Polson tennis continues to roll this season, with the final matchups close by.

It was a sweep for both the boys and girls as they took on Bigfork and Corvallis on May 8. The Pirates excelled as they continued to fight for state contention in mid-May.


Polson Girls 4, Bigfork Girls 3 

Starting with the girls, Cassie Schlicht of Bigfork beat Polson’s Baylee Lemm 6-1, 6-2. Greta Lund of Polson beat Amanda Leonard 6-0, 6-1. Grace Holtmeyer of Bigfork kept the wins up with a win over Alexa Kinaman 6-3, 6-3. 

Gwenna Lustig of Bigfork beat Polson’s Lindy Dupuis 7-6, 6-4, 10-8. Gwynn Bird of Polson closed out the singles with a win over Ira Hickey 6-0, 3-6, 10-8. 

In doubles, Josie Henriksen and Vivian Grainey of Polson beat out Rivera Persne and Bristall Wallin 6-0, 6-0. Embree Bird and Zoe Schroeder closed out the narrow team win with a victory over Jocelyn Holton and Bella Hickey 6-2, 6-0. 


Polson Boys 6, Bigfork Boys 0 

The boys swept, starting with Ruger Ellis of Polson beating Dan Cadson 6-0, 6-1. Maddox Bird of Polson beat out Jimmy Schlicht 6-3, 6-1. Arisio Cannon of Polson got a win over Rye Peterson 6-2, 6-4. Brody Kline closed out Polson’s singles sweep with a win over Curtis Scherfenberg 6-3, 6-1. 

Marcus Lucas and Teague McElwee of Polson got the doubles wins started by beating Graham Munson and Rhett Feikes 6-0, 6-0. 

Parker Hendrickson and Truman Sawyer closed out Polson’s strong performance with a victory over Parker Bach and Conner Riska 6-0, 6-0. 


Polson Girls 4, Corvallis Girls 3 

The Polson girls had another close one, starting with Ava Wiege of Corvallis beating Karly Smith 6-2, 6-2. Lemm got a win over Jakey Venema 7-6, 7-5. Lottie Jessop of Corvallis beat out. JoHanna Bieber 6-3, 6-0. Zoe Schroeder closed out Polson’s singles with a win over Kylie DeBuff 7-6, 6-4.

Hinkley Moss and Lund got Polson started with a doubles win over Brooke Child and Kenley Jessop 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Henriksen and Grainey got another win for Polson over Olivia Hanson and Shyanne Watt 6-3, 6-3. 

Claire Child and Vivian Sver closed out the wins for Corvallis over Polson’s Alexa Kinaman and Embree Bird 8-6. 


Polson Boys 6, Corvallis Boys 1 

It was another strong team match against Corvallis, as Ellis won for Polson over Pierce Yaskus, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Bird also got a win over Cody Humphrey 6-3, 6-3. 

Hadley Jessop earned Corvallis’s only victory over Kline 6-2, 6-2. Jaidon Mahkuk of Polson beat out Daniel Powell 6-3, 6-2. 

In doubles, McElwee and Lucas got another win for Polson over Atticus Chavez and Bradley Powell 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Zayne Newman and Strider Gage of Polson beat out Beauden Therrien and Jackson Philey 6-4, 6-4. Hendrickson and Sawyer earned Polson’s final win over Easton Jessop and Quincy Allred 6-2, 6-2.

Softball wrapped up this past week with Polson, Ronan and Mission/Arlee/Charlo all fighting against the best in Classes A and B. Despite no local team winning a state title, they all played close games to wrap up a successful year for these three softball squads.

Polson tennis stuns top competition at state tennis tournament

In a fight for the top of the high school tennis scene in Montana, the Polson team remained the lone participant of any Lake County school at any classification. Two singles and two duos took on the best at the Class A State Tennis Tournament in Hardin with a chance at state glory. Even with no state champions, each athlete competed to the end as the tennis season closed out.

Track season closes with top finishes in Missoula, Laurel

The final weekend of track and field wrapped up for all Lake County schools as the best athletes from each school tried their hand at earning a medal. Each area school sent at least one participant to the state meet, making this an exciting weekend of all the local schools.
