Lake County schools see qualifying finishes at divisional track meets

All of Lake County’s track and field teams took on their respective divisional meets this past week with the hopes of getting a chance to compete at the state track meets.

Many local athletes excelled as they hope for a shot at the top steps of the biggest meet of the season.

Western B/C Divisional showcases top Lake County talent

It was a tight competition in the Western B/C Divisionals on May 22-23 at Missoula County Public Schools Stadium.

Starting with Mission, Brooklyn Leishman took fourth in the girls 3200 meters and sixth in the 800 meters. Raileigh McDonald earned sixth in the 3200 meters as well.

McDonald, Leishman, Sheadon Kain and Leila Hogenson earned sixth in the 4x400 meter relay to cap off the girls track events.

Cora Matt nabbed sixth in the shot put as the lone Mission girl to finish top six in a field event.

For the Mission boys, the lone top six finisher was Lex LaFrombois, who took second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump.

For the Arlee girls, Karma Tibbetts snagged fourth in the 800 meters as the best Arlee girl in a track event.

Tibbetts and teammate Izabella Knoll got third and fourth respectively in the pole vault. Tibbetts also nabbed fifth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

The Charlo girls saw Brook Cahoon take fourth in the 100 meter hurdles as the best Charlo girls track performance.

Olivia Carnell and Avery Coleman each nabbed third and fifth in the shot put. Carnell also got fourth in discus.

Cahoon shone with the best Charlo girls result of the day with first place in the high jump. Jaylynn Buxbaum wrapped up the top placements with a second-place finish in the triple jump.

The Charlo boys saw Kenyan Dumont earn fifth in the 1600 meters, fifth in the 3200 meters and sixth in the 800 meters.

Karson Cox placed first in the javelin, second in the discus, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump with one of the best individual days out of any competitor. Tasker Brown earned fifth in the shot put while Dalton Carey earned fourth in the triple jump.

For Two Eagle River, the lone top six girls finisher was Christine Tenas who nabbed third in the triple jump.

No Two Eagle River boy finished top six in any event.


Western A Divisional sees multiple qualifying performances

Both Polson and Ronan took on the Western A Divisional from May 22 to May 23 at Lyle Bagnell Stadium in Frenchtown with many athletes earning state bids.

Starting with Polson, Amelia Stene and Rosie Lies both placed third and sixth respectively in the 100 meters.

Morgan Delaney nabbed second in the 800 meters and first in the 1600 meters. Quinn Delaney earned second in the 3200 meters and fourth in the 1600 meters. Kimora Scott got fifth in the 3200 meters. Kellyn Nelson took sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. 

Lies, Stene, Ravea Tenas and Amaya Shizuku earned fifth in the 4x100 meter finals.

Nelson nabbed third in the pole vault as well.

For the Polson boys, Luke Horner earned fifth in the 400 meters. Jackson DiGiallonardo claimed first and Jackson Bontadelli got third in the 1600 meters. Bontadelli placed sixth in the 3200 meters as well.

Isaac Kinnick took first place in the pole vault. John Sherry earned sixth in the shot put. Dion Lichtenberg got third in the javelin.

For the Ronan boys, William Normandeau got fifth in the 800 meters and Jhett McDonald placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles and sixth in the 110 meter hurdles. No Ronan girls earned a top-six finish.

All athletes listed above have qualified for their respective state meets. The Class A-C State Meet will be held from May 28 to May 30 at the Laurel Sports Complex in Laurel. The Class AA-B State Meet will be at MCPS Stadium in Missoula.

The softball play-in slate saw Polson, Ronan and Mission/Arlee/Charlo all punch their tickets to the state tournament. It was mixed results across the board but the result was the same as they all get one more week of softball action.

It was a battle for Polson tennis as they competed for a Northwest A title from May 20-22. While the Pirates couldn’t win it, they still showed a resilient effort against one of the state’s top tennis squads.
