SANDPOINT — An away doubleheader against the Sandpoint Bulldogs looked like it would be a tough encounter and so it proved. Despite the Badgers leading after the first two innings of game one, they lost both encounters and will look to rebound quickly ahead of a league matchup against Timberlake on April 17. 

Game 1: Sandpoint 8, Bonners Ferry 2 

The Badgers limited Sandpoint to seven hits but surrendered eight runs as a four-run fifth inning by the home team took the game away from Bonners Ferry. 

Colson Baisden, Jack Woods, Jake Solt, Kordale Burt and Gavin Rider each singled in the opener, with Solt getting on base twice. 

Burt was the team’s starting pitcher, giving the Badgers length with 4.1 innings. Jack Woods pitched the rest of the way, giving up one earned run in 1.2 innings. 

Bonners Ferry got off to a quick start, scoring one run on three singles in the top of the first inning. Burt threw a scoreless first two innings, before a triple allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the third for Sandpoint. 

The Badgers fought back in the top of the fourth inning, responding immediately after Stryder Liermann scored on an error to even up the ballgame.

A two-run two out rally from the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth gave them back the lead and they added four more in the fifth inning to put the game to ice. Bonners Ferry held the Bulldogs scoreless in their final inning at-bat, but in the end fell by six runs in the opener.

Game 2: Sandpoint 20, Bonners Ferry 3 

The final game of the doubleheader was an ugly one for Bonners Ferry, despite a superb three-for-three game from Kordale Burt.  

Along with Burt, Styder Liermann, Keenan Maas, Gavin Rider and Maddox Mertzweiler each recorded hits. Mertzweiler scored a run and recorded an RBI, also walking. 

Liermann also pitched 1.1 innings, not giving up an earned run while recording a strikeout. Rider pitched the final inning, giving up seven runs, only one of which was earned. He also struck out three batters. 

Sandpoint scored nine runs in the first inning, four more in the third and seven in the fourth inning. The game ended after the top of the fifth inning.   

The Badgers scored one run in the third inning, with Mertzweiler scoring on a line drive. They added two more on a single and fielder's choice in the third inning. 

Bonners Ferry will play Timberlake at home on April 17, with the game starting at 3 p.m. 

They will face Sandpoint again in a home doubleheader on April 21.
