SPIRIT LAKE — The Badgers trailed 8-2 going into the final inning of Game 2 of the district playoffs against Timberlake. If they lost, their season would be over. However, Bonners Ferry High School staged an incredible comeback, before falling just short of the win on Wednesday.

The Badgers started the scoring in the top of the second inning, plating two runs through singles from Ronin Hanson and Colson Baisden. However, a two-out rally from Timberlake in the bottom of the inning gave them four runs and a 4-2 lead. They would add four more in the fourth, where it would stay until a wild last frame.

The top of the seventh inning started off with Jake Solt reaching base on an error. Then, Maddox Mertzweiler singled. Two batters later, Keenan Maas walked to load the bases. The first run of the inning was scored off a walk from Gavin Rider. Kordale Burt cleared the bases with a double that scored three runs. All of a sudden, the Badgers had the tying run up to the plate with one out. A strikeout left Bonners Ferry just one out away from their season ending, still down two runs.

Stryder Liermann went up to the plate needing to get on base. He did more than that, hitting a double to score one run. Hanson reached base via an error.

Solt came back up for his second at-bat of the inning. On a 3-2 count he came through, driving in two runs with a line drive to right field that gave Bonners Ferry an improbable one-run lead.

Though the game would end in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Timberlake walk-off single, Bonners Ferry had come back from a six-run deficit in the game’s final inning in a display of perseverance.

Liermann was the most productive Badger hitter, with a double and single. He also added two runs and one RBI. Solt had two RBI’s and in total, seven Badgers recorded hits.

Jack Woods gave the team length, throwing 5.1 innings and striking out five batters. Walks were an issue for Badger pitching, who allowed eight of them.
