COEUR d'ALENE — A nine-inning classic helped the North Idaho Lakers 16U get back in the win column in a split doubleheader against Orofino on Saturday.

North Idaho 10, Orofino 9 (9)

COEUR D'ALENE — A gutsy day at the plate from Karsen Garvin and a massive sacrifice bunt from Cody Gutierrez helped the Lakers earn a walk-off win in nine innings to open the doubleheader.

Priest River High rising junior Garvin propelled the Lakers' offense throughout the day, going 3-5 with three singles and 2 RBIs. Garvin also notched four stolen bags in this game, including stealing home to clinch the walk-off comeback for North Idaho in the bottom of the ninth.

The Lakers would not have been in extra innings if not for the heroics of Gutierrez, who head coach Travis Tyler highlighted post-game. After two runs scored in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the Lakers trailing 9-8, Gutierrez placed down a perfect bunt into a fielder's choice, allowing Garvin to score and tying up the game. Despite not recording a hit, Gutierrez ended the day with two critical RBIs.

Tyler gave Garvin the start on the mound, where he initially struggled to find the umpire's strike zone and allowed four runs in the first inning. However, after the first, Garvin found a rhythm, throwing two more complete innings and striking out seven.

With Garvin running up against his pitch count, the Lakers went with Cy Marshall, who delivered a gem to close out the game. The Sandpoint High rising sophomore threw six innings, allowing just two runs on two hits and a whopping 12 strikeouts.

The highlight of Marshall's day came with the pressure on in the top of the ninth, with the game tied. After inducing a groundout, the pride of Sandpoint High struck the next two batters out swinging, allowing his team to score the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

At the plate, Marshall worked three walks and was scored three times. Drake Burk finished the day 2-5 from the plate with the Lakers' only extra base hit, a double in the bottom of the seventh to set up Guiterrez's bunt.

Tyler called the performance from his team in game one "gritty" and applauded his team for staying in the game and finding a way to win. After two tough games against Prairie, Tyler said his team needed to win to get back in the right headspace.

COEUR d'ALENE — A two-RBI single from Noah Langlois wasn't enough to jumpstart a gassed North Idaho team, which fell in the second game of the night against Orofino.

Despite two singles to open the game for the Lakers, it was Orofino who struck first with a double from Colt Schoo, getting things started for a four-run first. North Idaho continued to struggle offensively, while Orofino continued to jump on the Lakers' pitching, notching four more runs in the bottom of the second to put the game out of reach.

Showing off their trademark grit, the Lakers battled back down eight, working three straight walks in the third. With the bases loaded, Langlois and Bonners Ferry High star Kordale Burt singled to knock in the team's only three runs of the game.

Unlike his outing at the Battle at the Beach tournament, Burt struggled on the mound, walking six batters through two innings. Orofino parlayed the walks to a massive six-run inning in the fourth, which would prove to be the deciding factor in the shortened game.

With the split, the Lakers move to 4-10-1 on the summer season. After a hectic last two weeks, the Lakers get over a week off before they return home for a doubleheader against Lewiston.
