BONNERS FERRY — A man charged with assault after allegedly choking an individual at his home will have a preliminary hearing on May 8.

Stanley Philip Sweet, 60, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of battery after allegedly lifting a person by the throat until they nearly lost consciousness.

Sweet was given a $100,000 bond on March 18, 2026, which he posted March 22 in Boundary County court.

According to court documents, assault was alleged to have started Aug. 14, 2025, when Sweet began kicking the alleged victim’s dog, causing the individual to intervene. Altercations continued to allegedly occur, up to the point of Sweet grabbing the individual by the throat and squeezing, ultimately lifting them off the ground.

Court documents suggest the individual began to lose consciousness before Sweet allegedly threw them to the ground.

According to court documents, the victim recorded the interaction. A physical exam conducted the same day showed the individual had an eye injury consistent with strangulation.

A second incident was reported in February 2026, when Sweet allegedly threatened the victim and later struck them with a closed fist to the right ear.
