On April 1, 2010, Coeur d'Alene Press reporter Alecia Warren wrote an article making public Avista executive pay increases. CEO Scott Morris received total compensation of $3,000,000, Mark Thies (vp) received $831,000, Marian Durkin (vp) received $728,000, Karen Feltes (vp) and secretary earned $696,000, Dennis Vermillion (vp) received $733,000. Net income for Avista for 2009 was $87.1 million, improving from $73.6 million from the year before.

Child death rates plunge

Good news for American families: According to the Centers for Disease Control, children are safer than they were 10 years ago. The No. 1 cause of death for children and adolescents through age 19 - accidental death - fell more than 30 percent in the past decade (from 15.5 to 11 deaths per 100,000). The CDC's Vital Signs report released in April states 11,000 more children's lives were spared.
